  2.               INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE TRANSITION
  3.        NSFNET NNSC to InterNIC Directory and Database Services.
  4.  
  5. Starting April 1, 1993, the Internet Resource Guide (IRG) compiled
  6. and maintained by BBN, Inc. for the NSFNET Network Service Center
  7. (NNSC) is being transitioned to the InterNIC Directory and Database
  8. Services being provided by AT&T. This document provides details of
  9. this transition for users and entry providers of the IRG.

  11. Transition Overview:
  12. ---------------------
  13.     The Internet Resource Guide has been moved from nnsc.nsf.net to
  14.     host ds.internic.net in the /resource-guide directory.  The format
  15.     is the same as it was on nnsc.nsf.net.  It is available via
  16.     anonymous FTP, WAIS, and electronic mail.
  17.  
  18.     During 1993 the Internet Resource Guide will be incorporated into
  19.     the InterNIC Directory of Directories.  The first step will be to
  20.     move the ASCII text chapters into the Directory of Directories as
  21.     they currently appear in the IRG so that these entries may be
  22.     available to users of the Directory of Directories.
  23.     AT&T is contacting the IRG entry providers and inviting
  24.     them to convert their entries to Directory of Directories format.
  25.  
  26.     No more new or updated entries will be accepted for the IRG, but
  27.     if any are submitted, BBN Inc. will send them to the InterNIC 
  28.     Directory and Database Administrator.  The Directory and Database 
  29.     Administrator will contact the provider about putting the entry 
  30.     into the new Directory of Directories format.

  32.     The IRG will remain intact for at least one year.
  33.  
  34.     The mailing lists maintained by the NNSC (irg-ftp, irg-ps, irg-txt)
  35.     will be taken over by Directory and Database Services and merged
  36.     into one list (dirofdirs-announce).  This mailing list will be used 
  37.     to announce changes in the status of the IRG and updates to the 
  38.     Directory of Directories.

  51. Putting an Entry in the Directory of Directories
  52. ------------------------------------------------
  53.     The request form for placing an entry in the Directory of
  54.     Directories may be obtained from host ds.internic.net via anonymous
  55.     ftp.  Issue the following commands:
  56.  
  57.        cd pub/InterNIC-info
  58.        get dirofdirs-request.template
  59.  
  60.     Or, send mail to mailserv@ds.internic.net and include the following
  61.     command in the body of the message:

  63.        file /ftp/pub/InterNIC-info/dirofdirs-request.template
  64.  
  65.     This form contains a description of the new format, the terms and
  66.     conditions which apply, and a template for providing the information.

  76. Accessing the InterNIC Directory of Directories:
  77. ------------------------------------------------
  78.     You may use WAIS, anonymous FTP or electronic mail to access the
  79.     InterNIC Directory of Directories.

  81.      Using WAIS
  82.     ----------
  83.     To access the Directory using WAIS, telnet to ds.internic.net and
  84.     login with userid "wais."  No password is required.  The default
  85.     database is "resources" which is the database name for the
  86.     Directory of Directories.  An online tutorial and a help interface
  87.     are available to new users of the Directory and Database Services
  88.     WAIS client.

  90.     Using anonymous FTP
  91.     -------------------
  92.     FTP to host ds.internic.net.  The Directory of Directories is stored
  93.     in the "resource/" directory as ASCII text files in resource category
  94.     subdirectories (e.g. NIC, ftpsite, compcenter, archive, etc.).  The
  95.     IRG entries will have the same file names as they have in the IRG
  96.     directory (e.g. section1-1.txt).  Each chapter in the IRG is stored
  97.     in the following Directory of Directories subdirectory:

  99.        Chapter 1:  compcenter
  100.        Chapter 2:  library
  101.        Chapter 3:  archive
  102.        Chapter 4:  directory
  103.        Chapter 5:  provider
  104.        Chapter 6:  nic
  105.        Chapter M:  nirserver

  107.     Entries in the new Directory of Directories format have file names
  108.     based on an abbreviation of the name of the resource.

  110.     Using electronic mail
  111.     ---------------------
  112.     Entries in the Directory may also be obtained through electronic mail
  113.     by sending a message to mailserv@ds.internic.net.  To retrieve
  114.     individual files, include the FILE command in the message body.  FILE
  115.     has the following format:
  116.  
  117.         FILE - This command initiates a file transfer by emailfor each
  118.                file specified.  It requires a fully qualified pathname
  119.                for each desired file.

  121.                examples:  file /ftp/resources/newsletter/SimpleTimes.b
  122.                           file /ftp/resources/compcenter/section1-1.txt

  124.     A directory list may be obtained by including the LD (or DIR)
  125.     command which has the following format:

  127.         LS/DIR - This command initiates a directory listing for each
  128.                  directory specified.  It requires a fully qualified
  129.                  pathname for each desired directory listing.

  131.                  example:  ls /ftp/resources
  132.  
  133.     A users guide for the Directory and Database Services Mailserver
  134.     may be obtained by sending email to mailserv@ds.internic.net and
  135.     including the command HELP in the message body.

  137. Accessing the IRG
  138. -----------------
  139.     The Internet Resource Guide may be accessed using anonymous FTP,
  140.     WAIS or electronic mail.

  142.     Using FTP
  143.     ---------
  144.     FTP to host ds.internic.net and cd to /resource-guide.  The IRG
  145.     is stored in the same directory structure as it appeared on
  146.     nnsc.nsf.net.

  148.     Using WAIS
  149.     ----------
  150.     The IRG may also be scanned using WAIS by telneting to
  151.     ds.internic.net and logging in with userid "wais".  No password is
  152.     required.  When you receive the "search->" prompt, issue the command:

  154.        database resource-guide
  155.  
  156.     to point you to the IRG database.  An online tutorial and a help
  157.     interface are available to new users of the Directory and Database
  158.     Services WAIS client.

  160.     Using Electronic Mail

  162.     The files which make up the IRG may also be obtained through
  163.     electronic mail by sending a message to mailserv@ds.internic.net.
